NFL? More like NFLOL

Well… today was QUITE the day of sports news.

Ray Rice was suspended for two games back in March for punching his then-fiance/now-wife Janay Palmer in an elevator at a casino in Atlantic City, NJ. There was surveilance footage of Rice dragging an unconscious Palmer out of an elevator. That footage was viewed by lawyers and NFL brass, as well as the general population thanks to TMZ. In regard to the non-sever punishment, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that he “didn’t get it right”. Well no shit, Sherlock.
Today, September 8th 2014, six months after the incident, TMZ released the footage of what took place on that elevator that day. I unfortunately took the time to see this footage. It seemed that Janay was being aggressive towards Rice, and Rice just socked her in the face. That is uncalled for. What kind of piece of shit coward bastard son of a bitch would EVER lay their fingers on a woman?
What was the aftermath of this new footage? Well… Ray Rice got the ol’ heave-ho from the Baltimore Ravens. Shortly after, he was handed an indefinite suspension from the offices of the NFL. Bravo to you, Baltimore Ravens and Roger Goodell, but too little too late. The damage has been done.
The front office has already shown that smoking pot or popping molly and handing out $100 bills at the Kentucky Derby is MUCH more severe than assaulting a woman. The song and dance performed today was more of a PR stunt than a punishment, and don’t give me the “well the lawyers and Ray Rice lied to us” bullshit. The man ASSAULTED A WOMAN. HE HIT HER IN THE FACE. Provoked, self defense, it doesn’t even matter. Assault is assault, plain and simple.
You know what someone said on Fox & Friends said this morning? “If this situation has taught us anything, it’s that you should always take the stairs.”
The Ravens and Goodell should be ashamed of themselves for how this was handled. Ray Rice should have not only been suspended six months ago, but he should have been thrown in jail. This is just as despicable as the bullshit that Michael Vick did years ago. As I type this, I’m getting more and more furious. I EVEN tossed around the idea of selling my Bears tickets.
Now we will hear the NFL and Roger Goodell glorify themselves for doing the right thing. They’re going to yet again apologize for not handling the situation properly. They are going to say they care about the safety and well-being of women by saying, in so many words, “Hey we support women! We have a month where all of the players wear pink!” I was speaking to a female friend of mine this afternoon and she said something that really made sense. She said “Not all women have breast cancer. Breast cancer and women are not the same thing.Supporting breast cancer research and fundraising doesn’t mean they are supporting women’s rights.”
I have lost a lot of respect for the NFL. I know plenty of others have lost a lot of respect for the NFL. Shit, I know people who boycott the NFL completely (and this was BEFORE this Ray Rice debacle). Guess what? They don’t give a shit. They know that people are still going to spend a shitload of money on tickets, jerseys, RedZone packages, license plates, and other souvenirs. It’s arguably the must profitable sport in the world, and it will continue to be that way.
You know what else happened today? The NCAA reinstated Penn State to bowl-eligible status. Remember that whole Jerry Sandusky thing? They got the college football version of “early release from prison AND you are an upstanding citizen of the United States again… even though you tried to cover up the fact that someone in your organization was molesting children.”
Aren’t sports great?
I need a beer.
